Consider this mission.

An FO is in Loiter at 100 feet over an objective. Due to tactical requirements he is asked to re-position the copter to a lower altitude that would put the copter on the leeward side of a structure in strong winds with variable speeds.

Though the copter is rated for wind speeds to 25 -30 MPH, being on the leeward side of the structure wreaks havoc with the barometer and the copter will move several feet plus or minus in Z as these conditions change (Wind Speed) X and Y are solid to .5 meters

This behavior is anticipated and would be considered normal. We tested this scenario at the shop in 25 MPH winds whilst observing a borrowed sensitive vario used on hang gliders and was amazed by the rate of climb and decent it indicated during gust on the leeward side of a structure.

Short impulses appear to be damped by the software (3.5) quite well, but longer events are just seen as a climb or decent. (Once again a normal response)

We have several Lightware SF11/C,s sitting on a shelf that we could leverage but the question is can we leverage the rangefinder in Loiter or is it just active in "Landing Mode" if it provides vertical guidance in loiter then problem solved.

Second question. Can the same range finder be leveraged for rudimentary obstacle avoidance or warning whilst in forward flight (Auto) as we can machine a stabilized mount (In pitch at least) that enables us to position the rangefinder either for guidance in Z then command the rangefinder to rotate parallel to the terrain.

I don't believe that functionality exists now, but if it did it would be the cats meow.

Thanks in advance.
